Released December 15, 1992, The Chronic is one of the most culturally and historically significant albums in recorded music. Dr. Dre's debut solo album after departing N.W.A. popularized the G-funk subgenre within hip-hop — a production style so dominant that for the next several years it was virtually impossible to hear mainstream rap that wasn't shaped by it. In 2019, the album was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry as culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.
The album introduced Snoop Dogg to the world, launched Death Row Records, and set a production standard that artists still measure themselves against today. It won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance and yielded one of the most beloved singles of the decade in "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang."
